"Lock the doors and close the blinds -- we're going for a ride..."

... so there's this king who presides over a great kingdom in the west.  All is prosperous for him in his land and with his countrymen, except there's an ongoing war between his kingdom and the kingdom to the east.  The feud has gone back for generations, instilling a great hatred between himself and the king to the east.

A wizard comes to the kingdom and is welcomed with much fanfare. He has a private audience with the king and talks with him for a while. And after he does, he grants the king one wish -- with a stipulation:

"You can wish for anything. Absolutely anything. But there is one catch:  whatever you wish for, I will grant you.  But whatever I grant you -- I will grant your enemy, the king of the east, double what you've wished for yourself.  For example -- if you wish yourself one hundred sacks of gold coins, I'll provide that for you. But I'll provide your adversary two hundred sacks of gold coins."

The king thought about this for a long time. Finally -- he stated his wish to the wizard:

"Make me blind in one eye."

And it was so.
